Ric Host a rally to save Buriganga-31 October 2019
Rights groups at a programme here on Thursday urged the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to play a stronger role in saving the Buriganga River and keeping its surroundings clean and healthy.
They also called upon people to be more aware and careful while dumping wastes, and play an effective role in building the city as a clean one.
The speakers came up with the call from a human-chain programme organised by Nagorik Odhikar Sangrakkhan Forum (NASaF) in association with Resource Integration Centre (RIC), Solidarities International in Company Ghat area of Hazaribagh of the capital.
NASaF General Secretary Tayyab Ali said huge wastes from households and factories are being dumped into the river and its surrounding areas every day violating a High Court verdict.
“But DSCC is not taking proper steps to implement the verdict to make Hazaribagh-Beribadh area clean. The authorities concerned have to be more responsible,” he said.
M Hafizur Rahman, president of the organisation, said the DSCC must remove all the garbage from Beribadh area at the earliest so that pedestrians and commuters can move easily there.
“A concerted effort is needed to make Dhaka clean and healthy. The government should take strong steps immediately to stop river encroachment,” he added.
Many Hazribagh dwellers, several ward councillors, RIC representatives and social activists took part in the human-chain programme.
